“UNDERSTANDING THE BUSINESS BEHIND THE NUMBERS & WORKING TOGETHER TO FIND THE RIGHT SOLUTIONS.”

Based in our Edinburgh office, Sabelle Groves is an Audit Assistant Manager who works closely with businesses across a broad range of sectors, delivering high-quality audits while building strong, long-term relationships with clients. She coordinates audit fieldwork, supports teams on-site and works alongside managers and partners to ensure engagements run efficiently from planning through to completion.

Alongside delivering excellent client service, Sabelle plays an important role in mentoring junior colleagues, helping them build confidence, develop their technical knowledge and grow throughout their careers. Her organised, collaborative approach allows her to balance the needs of clients, engagement teams and wider audit objectives, ensuring every audit is delivered to a consistently high standard with clear communication at every stage.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH UNDERSTANDING

“For me, building strong client relationships starts with taking the time to understand the business before focusing on the audit itself. Every organisation operates differently, so understanding how they work, what drives them and the challenges they face helps build trust from the very beginning. I also believe in being open about what we need and why we need it. Bringing clients into the conversation creates a far more collaborative relationship, helps avoid unnecessary frustration and ensures we’re working towards the same outcome together.”

ADAPTING THE APPROACH TO EVERY BUSINESS

“A lesson I’ve learned throughout my career is that audit isn’t about finding one single ‘right’ answer. Early on, I focused heavily on getting every technical detail exactly right, but with experience I’ve realised that every business is different. The best outcomes come from understanding the wider context, having open conversations and working through challenges together. Taking the time to understand the situation before reaching conclusions leads to stronger relationships, better discussions and more practical solutions for everyone involved.”

PEOPLE ARE AT THE HEART OF AUDIT

“Before working in audit, I underestimated just how much of the role is about people. Technical knowledge is essential, but so much of the job is about building relationships, understanding businesses and having meaningful conversations. I enjoy breaking down challenges, asking the right questions and working collaboratively with clients to find practical solutions. When businesses understand that we’re there to support them, the whole audit process becomes more valuable and far more effective.”

CREATING CONFIDENCE WITHIN THE TEAM

“Supporting others is something that’s become a really important part of my role. I want people to feel comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and building confidence in their own abilities. I enjoy creating an environment where everyone feels included, quieter voices are heard and people are encouraged to take ownership of their work. AAB has given me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone throughout my own career, and I enjoy helping others do the same by providing guidance, support and opportunities to develop.”
