Nigel Greenaway is Head of Region for Wales and the South West at AAB, where he is responsible for driving value creation, M&A activity, and regional growth. A successful award-winning entrepreneur, corporate lawyer, and experienced corporate finance adviser, Nigel brings a unique blend of commercial, legal, and strategic expertise to the businesses he supports. Having founded GS Verde Group in 2013 and led it through multiple growth phases, acquisitions, fundraising rounds, and ultimately its acquisition by AAB in 2025, Nigel offers clients first-hand experience of building, scaling, and successfully exiting a business.
“My career has never followed the traditional advisory route. While I trained as a corporate lawyer, much of my experience has come from building businesses rather than simply advising them. In 2013, I founded GS Verde Group and spent the next twelve years growing it from a standing start into a multi-million-pound advisory business. Along the way, I led multiple acquisitions, fundraising activities, growth initiatives, and ultimately the successful sale of the business to AAB in 2025.
That journey provides a perspective that many advisers cannot offer. I understand the challenges, opportunities, and pressures that business owners face because I have experienced them firsthand. From managing growth and raising investment to integrating acquisitions and planning for exit, I have lived many of the same situations my clients are navigating today. That real-world experience allows me to advise from a position of practical understanding rather than theory alone.
Today, my role focuses on driving growth across Wales and the South West. This includes leading regional M&A activity, supporting the integration of acquired leadership teams, and working closely with colleagues across the UK to share best practice and deliver a consistent approach. Every day brings a different challenge, whether that is supporting a client through a transaction, helping shape growth strategies, or building stronger regional capabilities.”
“The most rewarding aspect of my work is becoming part of a client’s team. That level of trust is never immediate; it is earned over time through delivering results, providing honest advice, and demonstrating a genuine understanding of what the client is trying to achieve. When a client sees you as an extension of their business rather than an external adviser, that is when you know you are making a meaningful difference.”
“Throughout my career, I have advised businesses across a wide variety of sectors and transactions. I have led advisory assignments on significant growth stories and exits, including a cross-border £86 million disposal in the pharmaceutical sector involving a Welsh business and a US acquirer. I have also worked extensively across technology, food and drink, oil and gas, marine, and renewable energy sectors, helping businesses navigate strategic decisions and maximise value.
More recently, I helped a start-up business bridge the gap between professional advice and practical implementation. Often, business owners receive plenty of guidance but struggle to translate it into meaningful action. Helping clients turn ideas and advice into clear, achievable steps is one of the areas where I believe advisers can add the most value.”
“The foundation of every successful client relationship is understanding. Before offering advice, I focus on listening. Understanding what the client does, what they are trying to achieve, and what challenges they are facing allows me to provide advice that is tailored specifically to their circumstances rather than relying on generic solutions.
Over the years, I have built many strong client relationships, and a significant number of those have evolved into long-term friendships. That is one of the things I value most about advisory work. When you spend years helping business owners navigate important decisions and milestones, relationships naturally develop beyond the transaction itself.
For me, successful advisory work is never about applying a standard formula. Every client is different, every business is different, and every situation requires its own approach. Taking the time to understand those differences is what enables meaningful, long-term relationships to develop.”
“One of the most valuable lessons I have learned throughout my career is the importance of decision-making. Seeking advice and gathering opinions is essential, but ultimately progress depends on having the confidence to make informed decisions and take action. Businesses that succeed are often those that can assess information, make decisions, and execute effectively.
I have also learned that no two transactions, clients, or businesses are ever the same. The ability to adapt your advice to suit individual circumstances is crucial. Experience helps, but success often comes from understanding when to apply that experience differently based on the people and situation involved.”
“One of the biggest misconceptions within the advisory profession is that all advisers are essentially the same. In reality, the value of an adviser comes from their experience, perspective, and ability to apply knowledge to a specific situation. Generic advice rarely creates meaningful outcomes. The best advisers are those who understand the context, the people involved, and the wider objectives behind the decision being made.
Looking ahead, I’m particularly interested in seeing how artificial intelligence continues to reshape the business landscape. While technology will undoubtedly create efficiencies, I believe the real opportunity lies in how people use it. The businesses and advisers who can apply AI intelligently, specifically, and strategically will gain the greatest advantage.
Ultimately, whether advising on growth, acquisitions, succession, or exit planning, my approach remains the same: understand the client, provide informed advice, and help them make confident decisions that create lasting value.”
