“Practical legal insight for ambitious, technology-driven businesses.”

Nicholas Griffin is Commercial Director at AAB, specialising in commercial technology law, data protection, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance. Working with businesses ranging from ambitious start-ups to established enterprises, Nicholas helps organisations navigate the legal complexities that accompany innovation and growth. Combining strong technical legal expertise with a commercially focused approach, he supports clients in deploying new technologies, managing risk, and creating legal frameworks that enable sustainable business success. Known for his proactive communication style and practical advice, Nicholas works closely with clients to ensure legal compliance supports commercial objectives rather than becoming a barrier to progress.

Supporting Innovation

“My role is focused on helping businesses navigate the legal challenges that come with innovation. Every week is different, but it typically begins with reviewing active matters, assessing client priorities, and working with the wider team to understand capacity and identify where support is needed. From there, my time is largely spent advising clients on commercial technology contracts, intellectual property licences, data protection matters, and regulatory compliance challenges.

Alongside client work, I dedicate time to improving the way we deliver services by developing templates, playbooks, and processes that help create efficiencies and ensure clients receive consistent, high-quality support. This balance between technical legal work and continuous improvement is something I particularly enjoy because it allows me to add value both to clients and the wider team.”

COMBINING LAW & TECHNOLOGY

“My route into commercial technology law was not entirely straightforward. I began my career in litigation, driven by a desire to help people protect their rights and improve their circumstances. Over time, that evolved into helping entrepreneurs and business owners build and grow successful organisations. At the same time, I have always been fascinated by technology and the role it plays in shaping our lives. Commercial technology law and data protection provided the perfect opportunity to combine those interests, helping businesses embrace innovation while ensuring risks are managed responsibly.”

Making a Positive Impact

“One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is helping clients solve complex commercial challenges while enabling them to continue growing and innovating. I enjoy finding practical solutions to competing business requirements and helping clients navigate situations that initially appear difficult or uncertain. For me, the greatest satisfaction comes from seeing a client successfully launch, grow, and evolve after overcoming those challenges.”

EXPERIENCE THAT ADDS VALUE

“A recent example involved a client whose SaaS implementation had gone significantly off course. The supplier’s standard contract terms had left the client exposed when the technology failed to perform as expected, creating operational and commercial challenges. After reviewing the agreement, identifying the gaps, and assessing the risks, I helped renegotiate the contract to introduce clearer obligations, stronger governance arrangements, improved acceptance criteria, and more effective dispute resolution provisions. The result was a more balanced agreement and a healthier working relationship between the parties.

I particularly enjoy working with technology-focused businesses because the pace of innovation means there is always a new challenge to solve. Whether supporting a MedTech start-up with a licensing agreement or helping a larger organisation strengthen its information security arrangements, every project presents a unique opportunity to add value.”

RELATIONSHIPS BUILT ON TRUST

“For me, successful client relationships begin with proactive communication. It sounds simple, but maintaining regular, transparent, and consistent communication is often the difference between a good relationship and a great one. Clients want to know what is happening, understand the risks they face, and feel confident that their adviser is actively engaged in helping them achieve their objectives.

One client relationship that stands out involved a founder who viewed lawyers as little more than a necessary expense, only to be engaged when disputes became unavoidable. Through regular updates, weekly touchpoints, and proactive advice that anticipated potential issues before they became problems, I was able to demonstrate the value that legal support can bring when integrated into a business strategically. Over time, the relationship evolved into a trusted partnership where legal advice became a tool for growth rather than simply risk management.

Building trust takes time, but when clients begin to view you as part of their wider advisory team, it creates stronger outcomes for everyone involved.”

 LESSONS IN GROWTH

“One of the biggest lessons I have learned throughout my career came from transitioning from litigation into commercial technology law. Moving away from an area where I felt comfortable and experienced into a completely different specialism was challenging, but it taught me the importance of resilience, continuous learning, and maintaining focus on long-term goals.

That experience continues to influence how I work today. Whether supporting clients through unfamiliar challenges or helping them adopt new technologies, I understand that growth often requires stepping outside your comfort zone. My role is to provide the guidance and confidence needed to help clients navigate that journey successfully.”

THE VALUE OF TEAMWORK

“I value the collaborative culture within AAB. The openness, trust, and shared commitment to delivering the best outcomes for clients creates an environment where people can learn from one another and achieve more collectively than they could individually.”

 INNOVATION VS REGULATION

“One of the greatest challenges within commercial technology law is that technology evolves far more quickly than legislation. New technologies regularly create legal and regulatory questions that do not always have clear answers, requiring advisers to balance commercial realities with legal risk and regulatory expectations. My approach is to focus on proactive, practical advice and compliance-by-design principles that enable businesses to innovate without creating unnecessary barriers.”

BEYOND RISK MANAGEMENT

“A common misconception about lawyers is that they act as a bottleneck to progress or exist solely to identify problems. In reality, the best legal advisers help businesses move forward by identifying practical solutions, managing risk effectively, and creating frameworks that support growth.”

THE FUTURE OF AI GOVERNANCE

“Looking ahead, I am particularly interested in developing my expertise in AI governance. As businesses increasingly integrate AI into their operations, understanding how these systems create opportunities, risks, and regulatory obligations will become essential. Helping clients develop governance frameworks that are both compliant and commercially viable is an area I believe will become increasingly important in the years ahead.”
