“WE LIKE HELPING CLIENTS MAKE CONFIDENT DECISIONS THROUGH CLEAR AND CONCISE TAX PLANNING”

Based in our Newry office, Michéal McAnulty is an Assistant Manager in the Corporate Tax team who supports a wide range of clients with their compliance and strategic tax planning needs. With almost a decade of experience at AAB, Michéal has developed a deep understanding of corporate tax and the practical realities businesses face when navigating complex tax rules.

Michéal’s core focus is corporation tax compliance, ensuring clients meet their annual reporting obligations to HMRC accurately and on time. Alongside this, he provides tailored tax advisory services, helping businesses prepare for the future with strategies that align with their long-term goals. Whether guiding owner-managed businesses through compliance requirements or advising corporate groups on tax-efficient structures, Michéal’s approach centres on clarity, precision, and practical outcomes.

What drew Michéal to a career in tax was his long-standing interest in numbers, finance, and how businesses operate. He enjoys the variety that comes with working closely with different clients and tackling new challenges every day. For him, no two situations are the same, which means there is always something new to learn and an opportunity to deliver meaningful solutions.

Over the years, Michéal has built strong relationships with clients by combining technical knowledge with clear communication. His goal is always to demystify tax, helping clients understand their obligations and opportunities so they can move forward with confidence.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH TRUST AND TRANSPARENCY

“For me, building a strong relationship with a client starts with transparency from day one. We take an honest and realistic approach and encourage our clients to do the same. It’s important to understand their objectives and ensure any tax planning aligns with their wider business goals.

Frequent communication is also key. We continually revisit the end goal throughout the process to make sure we are moving in the right direction.”

HELPING CLIENTS GET BACK ON TRACK

“One situation that stands out involved a new client who approached us because they needed guidance on their reporting requirements. Their business was performing well, but they had fallen behind on both Corporation Tax and VAT compliance.

They operated in a high-pressure environment, which naturally created a lot of stress around the situation. Our role was to bring structure and clarity to the process. We worked closely with them to develop a clear plan to bring everything up to date with HMRC.

By approaching the challenge calmly and methodically, we were able to resolve the compliance issues and give the client peace of mind. Seeing that stress lifted and knowing we had helped stabilise their situation was incredibly rewarding.”

SEEING CLIENTS SUCCEED

“The most satisfying part of my role is seeing clients take the advice we provide and apply it successfully to their business. When a client trusts you to guide them through complex tax decisions and you see that advice deliver positive results, it’s a great feeling.

Their success feels like our success. Knowing that the work we do can make a meaningful difference to a business and its future is what makes the job so rewarding.”

SUPPORTING BUSINESS TRANSITIONS

“A recent project involved supporting a company through a reorganisation as senior shareholders prepared to exit the business and hand over to the next generation.

There were several important factors to consider, including structuring a suitable remuneration package for the exiting shareholders, ensuring capital gains tax was managed efficiently, and putting the right share structure and family agreements in place.

By working closely with the client and carefully planning each stage of the process, we were able to ensure the transition was smooth and seamless. It was a great example of how thoughtful tax planning can support both the business and the people behind it.”

MAKING TAX MAKE SENSE

“The greatest compliment I’ve received from a client was when they said, ‘That makes perfect sense, and thank you for having the patience to go through that with me.’

Tax can be complicated, and it plays a huge role in people’s livelihoods. I believe it’s important to take the time to explain things clearly rather than hiding behind jargon. When clients fully understand the advice they’ve been given, they feel more confident in the decisions they’re making.”

CONTINUALLY LEARNING IN A CHANGING TAX LANDSCAPE

“Tax legislation is constantly evolving, so staying technically sharp is essential. There’s no room for complacency in this profession. The moment you stop learning is the moment you stop improving.

I’m particularly interested in keeping up with developments such as Making Tax Digital for both Income Tax and Corporation Tax. These changes are reshaping how businesses interact with the tax system, and I’m excited to continue building my expertise so I can guide clients through the changes with confidence.”
