“There is never a ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to tax.”

Lisa Ryan is a Tax Director at AAB, based in Cork, working primarily in tax planning and consultancy services. With experience across all tax heads, Lisa supports clients ranging from entrepreneurs and family-owned businesses to large corporates, bringing a tailored approach to every piece of advice she gives. Her work spans everything from restructuring corporate groups and retirement planning to supporting clients through Revenue audits, and she is known for building long-standing client relationships built on clear communication and trust.

No Two Days Are the Same

No day in my role looks the same. My work is varied, and I could be working on tax planning to restructure a large corporate group in the morning, then meeting a client in the afternoon to discuss retirement planning. Supporting clients through Revenue audits is also a significant part of what I do. I have always been interested in tax and law, and that interest has shaped the direction of my career from the outset.

Tailored, Never Templated

My experience spans all tax heads, working with both small and large clients across diverse sectors, which allows me to bring a broad and practical perspective to every engagement. One of the most valuable lessons I have learned is that no two clients are the same. What works for one may not work for another, so advice always needs to be specific and tailored to each person’s individual needs and circumstances.

Built on Communication

Communication is central to how I build relationships with clients. When working with someone new, I take the time to discuss in detail what they want to achieve, where they want to go, and what their short and long term plans look like, while making sure they know I understand where they are coming from. It is this approach that leads to enduring relationships, and many of my clients stay on board with me for the long term.

The most satisfying part of working with clients is helping them achieve a tax-efficient goal and make informed decisions, spotting tax-saving opportunities along the way, and taking the worry around tax off their shoulders. A recent example that stands out is helping a client restructure their business to create efficiencies in the short term, while also factoring in their long-term goals around future exit and estate planning. What works well in the short term can affect tax reliefs further down the line, so thinking ahead and keeping the bigger picture in mind is essential, and it was rewarding to design a structure that achieved both. The greatest compliment a client has given me is knowing that they trust I am always doing my best for them, with their best interests at the forefront.

A Team-Focused Environment

What stands out most to me about being part of AAB is working alongside talented, experienced colleagues in a collaborative and friendly environment. It is a genuinely team-focused organisation, and that sense of collaboration makes a real difference to the way we work together and support our clients.

Ahead of the Curve

One of the greatest challenges in my specialist area is that tax legislation and practice are always changing and evolving at a fast pace. It is important to keep up with changes as they happen, whether that is Budget announcements, appeal cases, or shifts in Revenue practice, so that the advice I give clients remains current and relevant.

A common misconception about my profession is that it is boring or the same every day; in reality, the variety and complexity involved make it anything but. My top strengths are my attention to detail and my technical knowledge, both of which I rely on to give clients advice they can trust, even as the landscape around them continues to change.
