“Good accounting should not just report the past – it should shape what comes next”

Linzi Lumbley is a Tax and Accountancy Director at our AAB Bristol office, bringing over 20 years of extensive commercial and finance experience across practice, industry, financial compliance and advisory work.

An ACCA chartered accountant, Linzi leads a strong team and supports clients in making better financial decisions by combining financial reporting, tax, management information, forecasting, valuation and strategic advice.

With knowledge that business owners want clarity, direction and strategic financial support, Linzi helps businesses understand what their account numbers mean and how those numbers can shape future decisions.

Account Numbers Shape Decisions

“No two weeks are exactly the same, which is one of the things I enjoy most about my role. A typical week could include reviewing management accounts and board packs, meeting clients to discuss performance and strategy, supporting businesses with cashflow, tax planning, acquisitions or exit planning, and reviewing statutory accounts and tax positions.

My role is a balance of technical review, strategic advisory, team leadership and client relationship management. I am often involved in helping clients understand what their numbers are really telling them and how that should shape their next decision.”

Valuable Accountancy

“I have always enjoyed the commercial side of finance. For me, accountancy is at its most valuable when it helps people make better decisions, not just when it reports what has already happened.

The real turning point for me was seeing the impact that good advice can have on a business owner. When you can help someone understand their numbers, improve cashflow, grow profitably, buy a business, sell a business, or avoid a costly mistake, you become part of the decision making team. That is the part of the role I find most rewarding.

One of the most valuable lessons I have learned is that leadership through change requires both clarity and empathy. I have learned that teams need clear communication, consistency, support and direction. If people understand why change is happening and what role they play in it, they are far more likely to engage with it positively. That has shaped how I lead my team today.”

Understanding Clients Beyond Their Accounts

“I make sure I understand what matters to them beyond the accounts. That means understanding their business, their goals, their pressures, their frustrations and what success looks like for them personally. The non-negotiable for me is trust. Clients need to know that I will be honest with them, challenge them when needed and always act in their best interests.

The best client relationships are built when you move from being seen as ‘the accountant’ to being treated as part of the strategic team. I have clients who involve me in discussions around pricing, recruitment, cashflow, acquisitions, funding, group structure and future sale. Those relationships work because the client knows I understand their business, not just their accounts.

The challenge is often earning that position. You do that by being proactive, commercially aware, honest and consistent. Over time, clients learn that your input improves the quality of their decisions.”

Clarity Is Key

“The most satisfying part is helping clients gain clarity. I enjoy taking the numbers, cutting through the noise and helping clients understand what is actually happening in their business and what they should do next. When a client feels more confident because of the work we have done, that is hugely rewarding.”

Value for Clients

“One of the biggest challenges is helping clients move from compliance led thinking to strategic financial management. Many businesses only look at their numbers when accounts or tax returns are due. By that point, the opportunity to influence the outcome may have passed.

My approach is to help clients use financial information earlier and more effectively. That means better management accounts, clearer KPIs, stronger cashflow forecasting, regular review meetings and honest conversations about performance, risk and opportunity. The clients that get the most value from us are the ones who involve us before the decision is made, not after.

Importance of Compliance

“Compliance is important, but good accountants should add far more value than that. We should be helping clients understand performance, manage cash, reduce risk, improve controls, plan for tax, prepare for growth and make better decisions.”

Turning Complex Financial Information into Clear Advice

“My key strengths are commercial judgement, strategic thinking, client relationship management and team leadership. I can take complex financial information and turn it into clear advice that business owners and Boards can act on.

I am particularly interested in how finance teams can use better reporting tools, automation, AI and data analysis to improve decision-making. Clients need faster, clearer and more meaningful insight. Technology can help with that, but only if it is paired with strong commercial understanding.”
