“Clear, practical tax advice that stands up when it matters.”

Jonathan Seymour is part of our tax team, managing the day-to-day operations of the AAB tax department in Ireland together with our tax partners. His role focuses on overseeing tax compliance, supporting the development of staff, and providing tax advisory services across a wide range of clients.

Working across all areas of Irish taxation, Jonathan supports a broad client base, from individuals to large corporates. While his primary focus is on Irish corporation tax, his experience spans income tax, capital gains tax and capital acquisitions tax, enabling him to provide expert technical advice. Alongside his client work, he plays a key role in reviewing submissions and maintaining consistently high standards across the department.

Gravitation towards tax

“I initially trained as a Chartered Accountant, but during that time, I spent several months assisting the tax department in the lead up to a key deadline. I really enjoyed it and over time found I preferred the nature of the work. Once my training contract ended, I moved into tax full time. Looking back, it was the right decision for me.”

A technical and practical approach

“My role involves advising clients across a range of tax matters, although my main focus is on Irish corporation tax.

The key is applying technical knowledge in a way that works in practice. Clients are looking for clear answers and solutions that can be implemented, not just theory.

Staying close to the details is important and helps maintain consistency across the department.”

Understanding the full picture

“To advise properly, you need a full understanding of the client’s situation. That means looking at all relevant factors and identifying the most effective approach based on their circumstances.

Each case is different, and the details matter. Without that understanding, it’s difficult to provide accurate advice. That’s why getting under the hood early is so important.”

Solutions that save the client’s money

“The most satisfying aspect of the role is finding the most tax-efficient solution to a client’s problem and ultimately saving them money.

That often involves working through complex scenarios, identifying the relevant legislation and applying it correctly.

In many cases, the work is time-sensitive, particularly where deadlines or Revenue interventions or audits are involved, so accuracy and efficiency are both critical.”

Consistency across complex work

“Much of the work involves managing multiple deadlines and ensuring that a high volume of submissions is completed accurately.

For example, overseeing corporation tax returns, each with its own specific issues, requires a structured approach and attention to detail.

At the same time, advisory matters are running alongside that, which need to be addressed as they arise. You are wearing different tax hats depending on what you are working on and I enjoy that.”

Developing the tax leads of the future

“A key part of my role is supporting the team and ensuring they are learning and developing. That includes reviewing their work, providing guidance and helping them build their technical understanding.

It’s rewarding to see people progress, particularly when they meet challenging deadlines and deliver a high standard of work. Maintaining that level across the team is important for both client outcomes and the development of the department.”

Strong tax foundations

“My main strength is technical knowledge across tax, accounting and audit. That foundation allows me to deal with a wide range of issues and provide advice grounded in the relevant legislation.

Ultimately, the role is about applying that knowledge effectively and ensuring the right outcome for the client.”

Looking ahead

“Going forward, I’m focused on continuing to learn and staying up to date with tax developments. I have a particular interest in areas such as Research & Development (R&D) tax relief and the taxation of offshore funds.

I’m also looking forward to working closely with a wider team of experts, sharing knowledge and delivering the best outcomes for our clients.”
