“The best part of my job is seeing ambitious businesses succeed.”

Joe Foley is a Partner at AAB, based in Cork, with over 25 years’ experience working alongside entrepreneurs and owner-managed businesses. Throughout his career, Joe has enjoyed helping businesses at every stage of their development, from people launching their very first venture through to established companies planning for expansion, investment or succession. He combines strong technical knowledge with a genuinely commercial outlook, giving clients practical advice that supports better decision-making and long-term success.

Joe’s approach is rooted in the belief that good advice should be proactive rather than reactive. Rather than waiting for an annual review to raise issues, he prefers to stay close to his clients throughout the year, understanding their ambitions and challenges as they evolve, so that when important decisions arise, he is already well placed to help. Known for his approachable style and positive attitude, Joe believes the accountant should be one of the first people a business owner turns to when making an important decision, not simply someone they hear from once a year.

Backing Ambitious People

I’ve always enjoyed working with people who are building something. There’s a different energy around entrepreneurs and growing businesses; they’re constantly thinking about the next opportunity, the next investment or the next challenge, and that drive is infectious to work alongside.

Being able to contribute to that journey, offer another perspective and help clients avoid expensive mistakes is something I’ve always found rewarding. Over the years, I’ve seen first-hand how the right advice at the right moment can completely change the trajectory of a business and being trusted to provide that advice is a responsibility I don’t take lightly.

Advice Should Create Opportunities

I don’t see my role as simply identifying risks. Of course, clients need to understand where problems might arise, but they also want someone who can spot opportunities they may not have considered.

Whether it’s improving profitability, planning for expansion or making a significant investment, I enjoy helping clients look forward with confidence rather than worrying about what’s behind them.

Being Part of the Team

I’ve never liked the idea of accountants sitting on the outside looking in. The strongest relationships are where clients see you as an extension of their management team; you understand the business, you’re involved in key decisions and you’re someone they trust to challenge their thinking when necessary.

That’s when advice becomes genuinely valuable, because it’s based on understanding the business rather than simply reviewing the numbers.

Business Is Personal

For many owners, their business represents years of hard work and personal sacrifice. When someone comes to you for advice, they’re often making decisions that affect not only themselves but their family, employees and future plans.

That’s a responsibility I take seriously. It’s important that clients know they’ve got someone beside them who’ll give honest advice, even when the conversation isn’t always the easiest one.

Helping Businesses Evolve

The pace of change in business has never been greater. Technology, regulation and customer expectations are constantly evolving, so businesses need advisers who can adapt just as quickly.

One of the most satisfying parts of my role is helping clients embrace change, improve how they operate and position themselves for the next stage of growth.

Looking Ahead

I’ve always believed that success comes from building confidence. If clients leave a meeting feeling clearer about their direction, understanding their options and excited about what’s possible, then we’ve done our job well. That confidence often matters just as much as the technical advice itself, particularly for business owners facing a decision they’ve never had to make before.

As we continue to expand, clients benefit from greater specialist expertise and wider resources while still receiving the personal service they’ve always valued. It’s about giving businesses the confidence to think bigger, knowing they have the right people supporting them every step of the way, whatever stage of growth.
