How I Help

Tax planning. Succession planning. VAT advisory. Personal and business tax advice.

“Good tax advice is about understanding what matters to the client.”

Diarmuid Kelleher is a Tax Director at AAB, based in Cork. A Chartered Certified Accountant, Chartered Tax Adviser and Qualified Financial Adviser, Diarmuid has over 20 years’ experience advising individuals and businesses on tax planning, with a particular focus on succession. Much of his work involves helping business owners and families plan for the future, particularly where a business or wealth is being passed to the next generation. He focuses on making tax practical and understandable, helping clients understand their options and make informed decisions rather than simply presenting them with technical detail.

Diarmuid also has a strong technical background in VAT, having lectured in VAT for the Irish Tax Institute’s professional course, and brings that depth of expertise to the personal and business tax advice he provides day to day. Before joining the wider firm, he managed his own office in Killarney, which gave him the opportunity to work closely with clients and colleagues across a broad range of personal and business matters, an experience that continues to shape how he approaches client relationships today.

Planning Ahead

Succession is often something clients know they need to think about, but don’t always know where to start. The earlier we have that conversation, the more options there may be. My role is to understand what the client wants to achieve and then work through the tax implications in a clear and practical way, so they can make decisions with confidence rather than putting them off.

Making Tax Clear

Tax can be complicated, but the advice shouldn’t be. After more than 20 years in practice, I’ve learned that clients want to understand what the rules mean for them and, most importantly, what they should do next. My approach is straightforward: understand the circumstances, understand the objectives, and then provide clear advice that helps the client move forward, without unnecessary jargon getting in the way.

A Broad Technical Background

My background in VAT has given me a deep technical grounding that complements the succession and personal tax work I do day to day and having lectured on the subject for the Irish Tax Institute, I’m used to breaking complex rules down into something clients can actually apply. Running my own office in Killarney for a number of years also meant getting involved in a genuinely broad range of personal and business matters, which has given me a well-rounded perspective that I bring to every client relationship.

Working Together

Having worked in tax advisory for over twenty years, I have worked with a wide range of businesses and individuals, and no two situations are ever quite the same. Being part of a wider team means we can bring together tax, accounting and financial expertise where clients need it, rather than clients having to piece that support together themselves.

Ultimately, it’s about giving clients practical advice that helps them make better decisions, both now and for the future. There’s a real satisfaction in coming up with a solution that exceeds a client’s expectations, particularly on something as personal as succession, where getting it right can make a genuine difference for a family for years to come.
