“BUILDING TRUSTED RELATIONSHIPS AND DELIVERING PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS THAT HELP BUSINESSES SUCCEED”

Based at our AAB Newry office, Business Advisory Assistant Manager David Caulfield supports businesses across a diverse range of sectors with his extensive technical accounting and advisory expertise.

After many years of providing accountancy services to businesses in UK and Ireland, David has developed a strong understanding of the challenges businesses face and how they can achieve growth success.

With a proactive approach to problem solving and strong communication skills, David enjoys building long-term client relationships based on trust and clarity. He uses his knowledge to help clients make well-informed decisions while tailoring to their needs and adding value to their businesses.

PROVIDING TAX COMPLIANCE & TAX ADVISORY SERVICES

“My role can change significantly from week to week. A typical week involves managing client portfolios, reviewing and preparing statutory financial statements, management accounts, VAT returns and other compliance work.

I also assist with company secretarial matters, regulatory filings and practice management responsibilities such as managing deadlines, overseeing workflow and resolving technical issues.

A significant part of my role involves reviewing work prepared by trainees and junior staff, providing technical guidance and supporting their professional development.

Client interaction is also a key aspect of my position. I attend regular meetings, address accounting and compliance queries, and provide practical advice to help them meet their obligations and objectives.”

FROM AUDIT TO TAX

“My interest in accountancy was first sparked by my mum, who worked as an accountant. Seeing the variety of work involved and the opportunities the profession offered encouraged me to explore it as a potential career path.”

EMBRACING AND ADAPTING TO CHANGE IS KEY

“Throughout my career, I’ve worked with a diverse range of clients across various industries and business sizes across the UK and Republic of Ireland.

As the main point of contact for many clients, I’ve built strong relationships and provided practical advice tailored to their business needs. From this, I’ve developed a strong understanding of the different challenges businesses face at various stages of their growth. It’s also strengthened my ability to adapt my approach and provide practical, tailored advice based on the specific needs of each client and industry.

I’ve enjoyed the combination of technical accounting work, problem-solving and client interaction at AAB. The opportunity to support clients, help businesses make informed decisions and contribute to the development of junior staff has reinforced my decision to pursue a career in accountancy and progress into a management role.”

A STRUCTURED APPROACH

“One of the biggest challenges I find is keeping pace with changing accounting, tax and compliance requirements across both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. I approach this by staying up to date with regulatory changes, maintaining strong technical knowledge and working closely with colleagues to ensure clients receive accurate and practical advice.”

FROM TECHNICAL TO CLIENT-FOCUSED

“A key milestone in my career was moving from a technical accounting role to becoming the main point of contact for a portfolio of clients. As my responsibilities grew, I developed my communication, organisation and problem-solving skills, becoming more confident in leading meetings, explaining complex matters clearly and managing assignments from start to finish.

This experience taught me the importance of building trust alongside technical expertise. Clients value clear communication, responsiveness and knowing they have someone they can rely on. I bring this approach to my role as Assistant Manager, supporting clients while also mentoring trainees and helping develop the next generation of accountants.”

A TRUSTED ADVISOR

“The most satisfying aspect of working with clients is helping them achieve goals and giving them confidence in their financial information and business decisions. I enjoy building long-term relationships and being someone clients can rely on for support, whether that’s resolving a compliance issue, explaining a complex matter in simple terms or helping them understand the financial performance of their business.

One of the greatest compliments I’ve received from a client was that I’m the first person they contact when they need advice or support because they trust that I’ll provide a clear and practical solution. For me, that reflects the importance of building strong relationships and becoming a trusted adviser rather than simply providing a service.”

HELPING CLIENTS ACHIEVE GOALS IS REWARDING

“For me, the most important part of building a strong client relationship is understanding the client’s business and maintaining open communication from the outset. I make it a priority to understand their goals, challenges and how they operate so I can provide advice that is relevant and practical. Trust and responsiveness are non-negotiable because clients need to know they can rely on their adviser for timely support and honest guidance.”

MORE THAN JUST NUMBERs

“The most common misconception about my profession is that accountants only focus on numbers and compliance. In reality, a large part of the role involves building relationships, solving problems and helping clients make informed business decisions.”

BEING PART OF AAB

“The most rewarding aspect of working at AAB is being part of a collaborative team that genuinely supports one another while also having the opportunity to contribute to client success. I enjoy working alongside colleagues with a wide range of expertise and learning from their experience.

There’s a strong focus on professional development, teamwork and delivering excellent service to clients, which creates an environment where people can continue to grow and progress in their careers.”

A FRIENDLY APPROACH AND CARING ATTITUDE

“The top strengths I bring to AAB include a strong combination of technical knowledge, client relationship management and practical problem-solving skills. I take pride in being approachable, reliable and providing clients with clear advice while supporting and developing junior team members.”

LOOKING AHEAD

“I’m particularly interested in the continued development of cloud accounting, automation and AI-driven technologies. These tools have the potential to improve efficiency, provide better insights for clients and allow advisers to focus more on value-added support and strategic advice.”
