Malcolm Crawford is a Business Development Partner based in Edinburgh, he supports our teams and clients across Central Scotland. With more than 25 years’ experience in corporate banking, he has spent his career working alongside businesses across Scotland. He’s passionate about understanding how organisations operate, what drives their success, and where they need support to achieve their ambitions.
As Business Development Partner for Central Scotland, Malcolm spends his time meeting new clients, supporting existing relationships, and helping businesses access the breadth of expertise available across AAB. He also leads AAB’s Health & Social Care sector, championing the firm’s growing presence and ensuring clients benefit from joined-up advice that delivers real value.
Known for building long-term relationships based on trust, transparency and accountability, Malcolm believes business development isn’t about selling services. It’s about listening carefully, understanding what’s important, and helping clients make informed decisions that will benefit their business for years to come.
“The strongest client relationships are built on trust from day one. For me, that starts with listening rather than assuming I know the answer. Every business is different, so taking the time to understand their priorities is essential.
From there, it’s about being accountable. If I say I’ll do something, I do it. Being honest, transparent and delivering on commitments builds the kind of trust that leads to long-term relationships and lasting partnerships.”
“The most satisfying part of my role is seeing clients succeed. Knowing that the work we’ve done has helped make their business stronger, more efficient or simply made life a little easier is incredibly rewarding.
I’m equally fortunate to work alongside talented people who genuinely care about what they do. Across AAB, there’s a real sense of ambition, but it’s backed by thoughtful decisions and a clear direction. It’s exciting to be part of a business that’s growing with purpose.”
“Professional services is a competitive market, so clients have plenty of choice. The difference comes from taking the time to understand their business before recommending relevant options.
Too often, people assume firms are simply trying to sell services. That’s never been my approach. It’s about understanding what a client is trying to achieve, demonstrating where we can genuinely add value, and backing that up with real examples of successful outcomes. Combined with AAB’s breadth of expertise, that’s what helps us stand apart.”
“One lesson I’ve learned throughout my career is that great relationships aren’t built overnight. They take time, consistency and trust.
Some of the strongest client relationships I’ve developed started with open conversations, complete transparency and delivering exactly what I promised. When clients know they can trust you implicitly, that’s when real partnerships begin.”
“I’m excited to continue growing AAB’s presence across Central Scotland and to help lead the development of our Health & Social Care sector. There’s huge opportunity for businesses to benefit from the breadth of expertise we have across the firm, and I’m looking forward to introducing more organisations to everything AAB can offer.
I’m also keen to continue broadening my knowledge of the firm’s wider financial services offering and understanding how emerging technologies will shape different industries in the years ahead.”
“People sometimes simply equate business development being all about selling. For me it’s more about fundamentally understanding businesses, building relationships and helping clients solve problems or create opportunities, to deliver long term sustainable growth”.
And another misconception? That professional services firms aren’t dynamic. I certainly wouldn’t have joined AAB if that was the case!”
