"THERE'S NOTHING MORE REWARDING THAN PIECING TOGETHER THE FACTS."
Based in our Edinburgh office, Lauren Morrison is a Restructuring & Recovery Assistant Manager – supporting directors, employees and other stakeholders through complex, and often distressing, insolvency processes.
No two weeks are ever the same, with Lauren balancing client support, case administration, and detailed investigations into company affairs. From helping employees understand their statutory entitlements to analysing financial records and liaising with creditors, solicitors, and accountants, she keeps things moving and helps to secure the best possible outcome.
COMBINING PROBLEM-SOLVING AND FINANCIAL ANALYSIS WITH A PEOPLE-CENTRIC APPROACH
“I was drawn to Restructuring & Recovery because I wanted a role that combined problem-solving, financial analysis and working with people. What really appealed to me was the variety. Every case is different, every business has its own story, and there is always something new to learn.
The investigative side of the work is something I particularly enjoy. I like piecing together financial information, understanding what has happened within a business, and building a clear picture of the events leading up to insolvency.
At the same time, I find it incredibly rewarding to support directors and employees through what can be a difficult and uncertain period, helping to make the process as clear and straightforward as possible.”
EXPLAINING COMPLEX PROCESSES IN A CLEAR, STRAIGHTFORWARD WAY
“Over the past three years, I’ve developed a strong technical understanding of insolvency processes, alongside valuable experience supporting a wide range of stakeholders.
I’m confident in taking complex processes and explaining them in a clear, straightforward way, helping directors and employees understand what is required and what they can expect at each stage.
For me, it’s about combining attention to detail with a people-focused approach. I take pride in providing accurate, practical guidance while making sure stakeholders feel supported and informed throughout.”
CLEAR, EMPATHETIC COMMUNICATION
“One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of clear, empathetic communication, particularly when supporting people who may be unfamiliar with insolvency or uncertain about what happens next.
Early in my career, I realised that technical knowledge is only part of the role. Being able to take complex information and explain it in a way that is clear, reassuring and easy to understand can make a real difference to someone’s experience. This is particularly important when supporting employees with redundancy claims or helping directors navigate a liquidation for the first time.
I’ve learned to adapt my communication style to suit different people and situations, always focusing on what they need to know and how best to support them. My aim is to make sure people feel informed, listened to, and confident about the next steps, even when they’re facing a challenging situation.”
TAKING THE TIME TO UNDERSTAND PEOPLE’S CONCERNS
“I focus on being approachable, responsive, and supportive from the outset. Insolvency can be unfamiliar and stressful, so I believe taking the time to listen, understand people’s concerns, and provide clear, straightforward answers can make a real difference.
For me, building strong relationships comes down to open communication and consistency. By keeping people informed, being available when they need support and following through on what I say I’ll do, I can help build trust and give people confidence throughout the process.”
A COLLABORATIVE CULTURE
“What stands out most to me about AAB is the collaborative culture. Restructuring cases often bring together different specialisms, experiences and perspectives, and there’s a real willingness across the team to share knowledge, support one another, and work towards the best outcome.
Being part of AAB also gives me the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues and continue developing my skills. I enjoy being part of a team where everyone brings something different to the table, and where we can work together to find practical solutions that genuinely make a difference to our clients and stakeholders.”
SUPPORTING EMPLOYEES THROUGH REDUNDANCY
“I regularly support employees who are unsure how to access redundancy and other statutory payments following an insolvency appointment. Recently, I worked with a group of employees who were understandably concerned about the claims process and worried about potential delays.
I took the time to explain each stage of the process, guided them through the required paperwork, and kept them updated throughout. By providing clear, practical support, I helped ensure their claims were submitted accurately and efficiently, reducing uncertainty and helping them access the payments they were entitled to as quickly as possible.”
MAKING A STRESSFUL SITUATION FEEL MANAGEABLE
“One of the most meaningful compliments I’ve received is being told that I made a difficult and stressful process feel straightforward and manageable. Knowing that I’ve helped someone feel listened to, supported, and reassured is one of the most rewarding parts of my role.
Whether I’m supporting an employee who is worried about their financial situation or a creditor who is understandably frustrated by the circumstances, I try to approach every interaction with patience and empathy. If I can bring a little clarity and reassurance to what can be a difficult experience, then I know I’ve made a real difference.”
ORGANISED, PROACTIVE, AND DETAIL-FOCUSED
“One of the biggest challenges in Restructuring & Recovery is balancing the technical requirements of insolvency with the needs of people who may be facing a particularly difficult time.
I approach this by staying organised, detail-focused, and proactive, while making sure my communication is clear, patient, and empathetic. It’s important to me that stakeholders understand what is happening, what is required from them, and what they can expect next.
By combining technical accuracy with a people-focused approach, I can help make the process feel more manageable and ensure people feel supported throughout.”
INSOLVENCY IS ABOUT HELPING PEOPLE
“I think one of the biggest misconceptions about insolvency is that it’s simply about closing businesses. In reality, it’s about helping people and businesses navigate difficult situations, protecting the interests of stakeholders, and making sure processes are handled fairly, transparently, and professionally.
A large part of what we do is about people. Whether we’re supporting employees, working with directors, or dealing with creditors, many of our conversations involve providing clear guidance, practical solutions, and reassurance at a challenging time. For me, that’s what makes the role so rewarding.”
KEEN TO KEEP DEVELOPING
“Looking ahead, I’m keen to continue developing my investigative and analytical skills, particularly by making greater use of technology and data analysis tools to identify trends, anomalies and key information more efficiently.
I’m also keen to deepen my technical knowledge of insolvency and develop my leadership skills as I progress in my career. Ultimately, I want to take on greater responsibility, contribute more to complex cases, and use my experience to support and develop others within the team.”
