Meet the Private Client team
High net worth individuals. Globally mobile individuals. Owner managed businesses.
Income Tax. Capital Gains Tax. Property Disposals. International and UK tax planning.
Across all sectors.
Fiona Rooney is an Assistant Manager in our dedicated Private Client team. Although based in Edinburgh, Fiona advises individuals on all aspects of UK personal tax, with a particular focus on international matters such as moving in or out of the UK. She manages the compliance process to ensure clients meet all of their filing obligations and are kept up to date with changes in the tax landscape, identifying tax planning opportunities where possible.
“A great client relationship is based on mutual trust. I want to know their situation and their plans for the future, anything that may affect their tax liabilities or that we can help with planning for. They need to know they can trust me with that information and that we will provide value for money in identifying their best course of action.”
“I love helping my clients to get the best outcome. This could be anything from providing an advisory report that has the exact answers to their questions, coming up with solutions they hadn’t thought of, or dealing with HMRC on their behalf. An investigation can be stressful (or even just trying to get a day-to-day issue sorted) and I am really pleased to take that weight off their shoulders.”
“Virtual working enables us to work with clients from all over the world, which is especially helpful when dealing with international tax planning. I am always happy to meet a client though – sometimes a meeting in person is the best way to get together and talk through paperwork. And, of course, if it’s in the office, I get to show off the great views of the Edinburgh skyline!”
“With international clients there’s always something new to learn. One day you could be looking at a Swiss pension and the next a US investment portfolio, there is endless variety. The legislation and tax treaties can be complex but taking the time to fully understand them pays off. Chances are a colleague in the group has seen the situation before too, so reaching out to them for support can help with finding an efficient solution.”
“I had a varied career before joining AAB – my first job in tax was with HMRC, in their risk and intelligence department and then as a compliance officer. Having seen things from the other side, I can support my clients with meeting all their compliance obligations and should worst come to worst, assist with responding to an investigation as efficiently as possible. I am a thorough researcher, very detail oriented and I stay calm and collected under pressure.”
“The continuing growth of the group is an exciting time, seeing new colleagues with more specialties joining is great. There are more opportunities for the team than ever, and it’s fantastic seeing the firm expand internationally with the offices in Ireland and the US.”
“One of AAB Groups core values is ‘Collaboration is our superpower’ and I really think this is fundamental in how I approach my work for clients and within the wider team. If I don’t know the answer myself, then there’s always someone else who will, or at least knows where to find it! There are so many specialists and pockets of niche knowledge within the group and we work closely with other locations and teams to make sure we get the best result for the client. It’s great to have so much support within the firm.”
“If you tell a stranger you’re a tax advisor, the first response is often either “that must be boring” while pulling a face, or “can you save me some tax?” While tax maybe isn’t the most thrilling topic sometimes, there’s a lot of variety in my work and I do love the occasions we can save a client from paying too much!”
