“There’s no better feeling than celebrating success alongside a client”

The CIOT, recognised as the UK’s leading body for tax experts, is synonymous with excellence and deep technical expertise in all areas of taxation. This membership underscores Finlay’s commitment to maintaining the highest professional standards and staying at the forefront of industry knowledge – offering clients the reassurance that their tax affairs are in the hands of a trusted, well-informed specialist.

Driven by our clients’ goals

“I look at client relationships as more of a partnership. To me, it’s about respecting and understanding each other, ensuring clients feel valued, but so do we as advisors. This respect and understanding helps to build relationships on trust, and with this trust, the sky really is the limit on what you can achieve together. It’s also important that the goals of clients and us as advisors are aligned. Without this, you aren’t working together, or towards the same goal and this will inevitably impact the outcome.

For me, one of the most satisfying aspects of working with clients is being able to contribute to their success.  Whether it’s through providing strategic advice, implementing solutions, or simply offering support, knowing that my work has a positive impact is very rewarding.”

Challenging what’s been done before

“I’m someone that believes in challenging the status quo. Taking inspiration from other sources and thinking outside of the box enables me to not only create innovative solutions for my clients, but also assist them in implementing these. It’s something that my clients appreciate because it helps to drive them towards achieving their goals. I’m a firm believer that just because something has been done one way before, this doesn’t mean that it can only be done that way.”

A dynamic and positive culture

“The culture at AAB puts a real focus and emphasis on collaboration, which is something that initially drew me to my role. It’s not just collaborating with clients to help them achieve their goals, we also collaborate as a team across service lines. This helps to inspire us as we’ve been able to create a dynamic working environment that helps us to bring different perspectives and expertise to the table to achieve one common goal. Working in this culture makes me feel inspired to share my ideas, face challenges head on knowing I’m not alone, and helps to keep me motivated to continually learn in order to provide the best possible advice to clients.”

Finding the right positive balance

“Tailoring my approach to the preference of clients is essential for success. Some relationships thrive on in-person meetings that help build trust and break down the digital barriers. Others benefit from the flexibility of virtual interactions and being able to get advice on-demand. Striking the right balance allows me to remain responsive, efficient, and always put the needs of our clients first no matter the circumstances. I enjoy the variety that comes with in-person and virtual communication – which is why I’m more than happy to defer to the preferences and needs of my clients.”

Better to be proactive, not reactive

“Much like everything, tax regulations are always changing. To ensure our clients are compliant and that the advice we give them is the most up to date, it’s important that we keep up with changes and technological advancements. Being able to be proactive and prepare clients for changes that are coming is something they really appreciate. So, taking the time to stay informed through workshops, professional body updates, industry events isn’t a hardship – it’s something that we all enjoy doing knowing that the outcome is beneficial for our clients.”

I’m excited about what the future holds

“The opportunity to grow in my career with AAB excites me the most. Whether it’s through learning new skills, embracing new technologies, seizing and tackling unique projects, I’m driven by the chance to personally and professionally develop. Knowing my work contributes to my clients’ success and AAB’s growth makes my career truly rewarding and the work I do worthwhile.

AAB’s ongoing growth journey and expansion into new markets and bringing new services to our clients is inspiring. Operating in the professional services sectors comes with a bit of prejudice where we’re perceived to crunch numbers all day long, however, in reality, this couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m proud to be part of a team that continually challenges the status quo by introducing new technologies, which feels like a game-changer for the industry. This enables our teams to continually improve efficiency and enhance the services we offer; while keeping our clients front of mind at all times.

It’s exciting to be part of a forward-thinking team that’s not afraid to disrupt the norm, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the future looks like at AAB.”
