What Makes an Effective People Manager?

BLOG1st Aug 2023

A recent guide published earlier this month by the CIPD entitled ‘Effective People Managers: An Evidence Review’ highlights the pivotal role that people managers play in creating an engaging, motivating and psychologically safe work environment. The guide highlights how people managers who are capable and well supported have a positive influence on: –

  • Employee wellbeing
  • HR outcomes (e.g., engagement levels, workplace culture absence, turnover)
  • Capability and performance
  • Innovation
  • Strategy implementation
  • Organisational change programmes

Among its recommendations, the report encourages employers to think about and treat managers as a key driver of organisational success and to ‘cultivate a supportive organisational climate’ which include giving managers access to advice, guidance, and training’.

In its closing series of recommendations, the guide calls on employers to view manager training and development as an investment that will reap long-term returns and to consider how to democratise access to learning so that leadership development becomes an option for the many, not the few.

Our ENGAGE Leadership and Management Programme, accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) seeks to support managers to become effective people leaders. The programme is suitable for new and experienced first line and middle managers from all organisational sizes and sectors and is available on both a face-to-face basis at Think People offices in Belfast and virtually. Further information on the programme and our upcoming dates can be found here.
